New location, new model, new challenge

Sometime, it’s easy to stuck in your comfort zone and it happens often to a lot of photographers that I know. They tend to shoot in the same location and apply the same approach to their photoshoot. Of course, there is absolutely nothing wrong with this method. The advantage of shooting in the same location give you the easy feeling of knowing all the angles and lighting to used. The drawback of this would be having the same background on all of your images. It yields the feeling of repetitive and redundance.

I’m a strong believer of continuous learning whether in photography or any field. There is no such thing as staying neutral in your career. If other people are learning and you are not, then you are falling behind. You are not staying neutral. Because of this reason, I’m seeking new learning experience in photography continuously whether a new way of retouching the image or a new approach to photoshoot.

This recent week, I had the opportunity to work with Tracey on a shoot. I scouted a few locations online by googling and found a few great places to shoot. A few of these locations I had already used in my past photoshoot. I also stumble upon a new location which seem to be a great one judging by the photo that other had taken there. I debated whether to use this location or my previous ones which I know the area really well. I don’t know if they going to let me shoot there or if it’s going to be too shaded that I will have to use flash without any ambient light. A lot of questions were running through my head at that time all the way till 2 hours before the photoshoot. Finally, I decided to use the new location. I feel that it would give me a new opportunity to learn and try out different shooting angle at this place.

It turned out the new location is fantastic. It’s the Salk Institute in San Diego. Located in the heart of University of California San Diego’s campus. Founded by Dr. Jonas Salk and designed by architect Louis Kahn. The architecture is amazing with marbles all around both floor wall. I would highly recommend for everyone to check out when you are in San Diego.

This is my first time working with Tracey so I have to get her to be comfortable with the poses and my way of shooting. Tracey is great at posing on her own but she still need to get use to other poses. I’m sure our second shoot will be much better and with more improvement so stay tune.
